Listen To Me
Nuit Blanche, Brussels (B)
Saturday 3 October 2015 - 19:00 - 03:00
Rue du Grand Hospice | Grootgodshuisstraat, Brussels (B)
With the video installation Listen To Me, the Brussels-based sound artist Stijn Demeulenaere reminds us that we do not just listen with our ears, but with our whole being. On every screen, a person is absorbed in listening to sound extracts that we cannot hear. It is left to the imagination to decode the subtle expressions of the filmed faces …

The interactive sound installation consists of a field with 100 transparent sculptures in which soil appears to be floating and sound rises from this soil: rustling, murmuring, voices and snatches of music. As visitors move through this installation, the sounds retreat. Wherever people go, the music hushes to a murmur.

Predicting the future is difficult, but it is worth analyzing current trends in the field of media arts to predict its impact on the cultural sector. The phenomenon of 'hybrid' artists working with the latest technologies and science and swinging between different disciplines such as; contemporary art, performances, music and theater increasingly affects even the most unplugged of cultural institutions. The growing success of alternative arts organizations, festivals and curators adapting their strategies to these new evolutions will profoundly influence the future of the artistic landscape in Belgium and abroad. Ten short lectures will present how curators, art managers and directors of museums respond to these latest evolutions in the art world. With a Key Note by Ischa Tallieu - Tallieu Art Office.

David Bowen his installations, videos and sculptures are typically a high-tech expression or mapping of the landscape. He utilizes satellite data, sensors, 3-d video imaging, etc. to provide high tech views into the world around us. The artfulness of these pieces ironically comes both from the limitations of the mapping systems and the artist’s arrangements.

Performance: Friday 9 October 2015 - 19:30

The Norwegian Way (2010) - an introduction to the Oil for ART-program - is a staged lecture full of sarcastic humor about life in contemporary Norway. Thanks to the artist – a citizen of that Nordic country – you will understand the basics of its oil boom and the often non-existent relationship between money and fortune. Join Sveen in trying to decide whether contemporary art can change the world.
